Porto Fall 2024

The Fall Common Session 2024–University of Porto – 27 till 29 November 2024

Theme: Democracy, Criminology and the Rule of Law

2024 marks the 40th anniversary of the Common Study Programme in Critical Criminology and the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal that ended a long and harmful dictatorship. This means that when the Programme was created, Portugal was still in its infant days of democracy and only much more recently did the scientific, social and economic conditions of the country allow for the development of Criminology and critical analyses in Portugal. The winter session of the Common Study Programme to be held in Portugal will bring together the remembrance of 40 years of advancing Critical Criminology and historical lessons of fighting oppressive and unfair regimes through action, science and policy. We welcome all papers that wish to celebrate the 4 decades of the Common Study Program, including those who are no longer with us but left a mark on all generations of students and scholars. Papers on the more recent authoritarian temptation felt and lived in many countries worldwide, as well as the impact it has had on crime, deviance, crime control and victimization, will also be greeted.
